Bio
Dot Als is a French artist living and working in London. Working across sound, sculpture, installation, 3D and light, he builds each work himself, from composition through to fabrication, so that the breadth of the practice and its single authorship are inseparable.
Born in French Alps, Dot Als was formed by the underground electronic music scenes he came up in, carrying their do-it-yourself ethos and aesthetics into the gallery; a childhood around his mother, an early computer scientist, left a quieter inheritance, though his way into art was always aesthetic before it was technical. Light runs through the work, which holds to the seam between the physical and the virtual, and between the old and the new, setting weathered, hand-made matter against cleaner, synthetic surfaces and asking what each gains and loses in the meeting. Recent presentations include Purist Gallery, London; Van Abbehuis, Eindhoven; and Lowlowland Art Space, Guangzhou, alongside live performances in places like Deptford Hall & Avalon Cafe, London.
